For over 21 years, Bare Essentials Natural Market has been a leader in green business products and practices. Owners Mary Underwood and Ben Henderson bought the business, originally located in downtown Boone, and for many years were the only source of organic foods—the ultimate green and sustainable products—in the community. A move to Boone Heights Drive in 1998 allowed us to do even more of what we do best!
Bare Essentials Natural Market offers quality, wholesome products free from harmful ingredients. At Bare Essentials Natural Market, you can find fresh organic produce, all kinds of packaged organic foods, earth-friendly home and personal care products, and a huge variety of nutritional supplements. Everything we sell is backed by our unconditional satisfaction guarantee.
Waste reduction has always been a priority at Bare Essentials Natural Market. Many packing materials are redistributed to a locally-owned shipping business for reuse. Office supplies from paper to printer cartridges are reused, refurbished, and recycled whenever possible. Plastic bottled water was removed from our shelves in 2008 to reduce plastic waste as well as the carbon footprint of shipping water in plastic bottles around the world. Customer response was overwhelmingly positive, and now we offer a broad selection of reusable and recyclable beverage containers instead.
Bare Essentials Natural Market was long the High Country’s only source of organic and natural foods, which focus on sustainability in production. In recent years, the need for sustainability in distribution has become increasingly important, leading to more and more local products appearing on our shelves. The less distance a product has to travel, the less fuel that has to be consumed to deliver it.
Through a purchasing program known as the Bare Essentials Case Club, customers can make bulk and case purchases at nominal prices, which saves money and resources on packaging, shipping, handling, and repeated shopping trips.
The entire staff is always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, and many of our best ideas have come up from the staff, such as composting, programmable thermostats, the ban on plastic bottled water, and the use of low-power settings on our computer terminals. This aspect of our employee culture is invaluable, and easily one of our best assets.
Based on the level of performance, a participating business is awarded a Level of Green Excellence ranking of one, three, or five stars. Certification is valid for two years.
In order to achieve the level of 3, Bare Essentials Natural Market acquired a minimum of 90 points.
